Artificial intelligence has made significant strides in the field of programming. OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil, predicts that AI will surpass human coders by the end of this year. He made this bold statement while speaking on a YouTube show, emphasizing the rapid advancements in OpenAI’s models.
'Now you don’t even need code to be a programmer. But you do still need expertise'
AI is so good at writing software that one father asked it to organise his kids’ school lunches. But that doesn’t mean it’s taking over…https://t.co/Lq9jxvnSE9

Weil explained how each new version of GPT has dramatically improved in competitive coding. The preview version of GPT-01 was only as good as the millionth-best competitive programmer in the world. However, subsequent versions saw significant improvements, with GPT-01 ranking among the top 1,000 competitive programmers globally.

Gen AI is transforming software development by boosting productivity—but it's also raising significant security concerns. CSA’s Josh Buker highlights how AI coding assistants are streamlining development but also introducing risks.https://t.co/Lb88VawvjG#AI #DevSecOps

The upcoming GPT-03 is expected to be even more impressive, ranking as the 175th best competitive coder in the world. Weil believes this year will be a historic turning point, stating, “I think this is the year that, at least by competitive coding benchmarks, AI becomes better than humans at competitive coding forever. In the same way that computers passed humans at multiplying 70 years ago and AI passed humans at chess 15 years ago.
AI expected to surpass human coders
This is the year that AI gets better than humans at programming forever… and there’s no going back.”
Weil also highlighted the transformative impact AI-powered coding will have, making software development accessible to everyone.
He noted that while human expertise will still matter, AI will complement every job, with people increasingly becoming managers of AI employees that will do a lot of the basic work for them. Similarly, Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, announced at a Council on Foreign Relations event that AI could be writing 90% of software code within three to six months. He further predicted that in just 12 months, AI might be responsible for essentially all code writing.
Amodei emphasized that software developers will still play a crucial role in the near term, primarily in feeding AI models with design features and conditions. However, he believes that AI systems will eventually take over these tasks as well. As AI technology continues to evolve, its impact on the workforce and various industries remains a topic of significant interest and debate.
While some experts predict job displacement, others see AI as a tool to enhance productivity and democratize access to software development.
