It begins in 1957 with the development of Fortran and ends in 2005 with the introduction of Ruby on Rails. Along the way, it covers Cobol, Basic, C, Pascal, C++, Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java and JavaScript, with code samples from each.

The graphic also includes that latest stats from TIOBE on the popularity of programming languages. The current top five are Java, C, C++, C# and PHP.
