AWS CEO Matt Garman thinks AI coding tools could change the role of developers in the coming years. He said that “most developers are not coding within two years.” Garman believes the key skill for developers is not writing code itself but being able to innovate and build something interesting for users. His comments come as the rise of AI tools is causing some to warn about potential job cuts for developers.
Nvidia CEO Jens Huang made similar predictions, saying that with advances in AI, learning to code should no longer be the priority. “The miracle of artificial intelligence is that everybody in the world is now a programmer,” Huang said. However, GitLab CEO Sid Sijbrandij pushed back on this idea.
He said the question should not be whether AI will replace developers but “How can businesses harness the power of AI across the software development lifecycle to accelerate innovation and drive tangible business impact for customers?”
Others point out the limitations of AI coding tools.
AI tools reshape developer innovation
Peter Schneider from software design firm Qt Group said that while these tools can boost productivity, they struggle with industry-specific code.
This leads to much time spent reviewing code suggestions, which may not improve overall productivity. He emphasized that human oversight is still critical even if the tools get more accurate. Experts also challenge the claim that ‘everyone is a programmer now’ thanks to AI.
Peter van der Putten from Leiden University said understanding major programming languages will still be an essential skill. Without skilled coders, he argued, businesses could face inefficiencies and potential vulnerabilities from letting non-coders generate software. In summary, while AI coding tools are poised to transform software development, the role of human expertise and oversight remains essential.
Developers may spend less time writing code from scratch, but their skills in innovation, quality assurance, and managing AI-generated code will be more critical than ever.
