Melinda French Gates endorses Biden in historic move

Historic Endorsement

Melinda French Gates has endorsed President Joe Biden for the upcoming presidential election. This marks the first time the billionaire philanthropist has publicly supported a presidential candidate. In a statement, French Gates emphasized the high stakes for women and families in this election.

She expressed concerns about former President Donald Trump’s first term, which she believes endangered women’s health, safety, and essential freedoms. After Trump’s first term in office endangered the health of women, compromising their safety and robbing them of essential freedoms, I’m supporting Biden this election and asking others to do the same,” French Gates wrote. Despite her long-standing involvement in bipartisan politics, French Gates has traditionally refrained from publicly endorsing any candidate.

However, she felt compelled to support Biden due to the current political landscape and Trump’s rhetoric, which she described as “often divisive, sometimes violent” and included “sexist attacks on women journalists and calls for his opponents to be jailed.

French Gates also addressed policy changes under Trump, such as restrictions on foreign aid to reproductive service providers and changes to a federal family planning program. She highlighted the impact of the Supreme Court justices he appointed, leading to the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

“In the two years since Roe v. Wade was overturned, emergency rooms have turned away pregnant women in desperate need of care because doctors feared legal consequences,” French Gates wrote. Obstetricians have fled states with strict bans, which could leave women without access to basic services like contraceptives.

She warned that if re-elected, Trump would allow states to monitor and prosecute pregnant women.

In contrast, French Gates praised Biden for fighting for reproductive freedom, reinstating critical funding, and supporting access to medication like mifepristone. She called Biden “the strongest champion for caregivers the Oval Office has ever seen” and credited him with understanding the crucial role women play in the country’s future. “That’s why Biden has earned my vote.

I urge anyone who cares about women and families to join me,” French Gates concluded. In May, French Gates announced her decision to step down from the nonprofit organization she co-founded with her ex-husband, Bill Gates. She committed significant support over a two-year period to organizations advocating for women and families worldwide, underscoring the critical moment for gender equality across the globe.
