Amazfit Active 2 impresses with style and value

The Amazfit Active 2 offers an impressive mix of style and functionality at a budget-friendly price. Compared to previous iterations, Amazfit has perfected the art of making devices that look much more expensive than they are. This fitness tracker stands out with its sophisticated design, resembling higher-end watches from brands like Seiko, Timex, or Casio.

There are two versions of the Amazfit Active 2. The base model, priced at $100, comes with a silicone strap, while the premium $130 version features a leather strap and a sapphire glass face. The stainless steel case has two buttons on the side for control—the Go/Back and Stop/Start buttons, opposite to Garmin’s, offering a slight learning curve for those switching brands.

It is rated for water resistance up to 5 ATM and can handle depths up to 50 meters. However, to avoid damaging the leather band, it is advisable to remove it before swimming. The 1.32-inch AMOLED display boasts a peak brightness of 2,000 nits, ensuring indoor and outdoor visibility.

Amazfit Active 2 features and design

The watch can download maps from the Zepp app, although map precision can be variable. It also supports various health and fitness tracking features, including 164 workout modes and sensors for heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, and temperature.

A significant improvement over previous models is the absence of mandatory additional subscriptions to unlock the watch’s full functionality. However, the app still contains upselling prompts. One downside is the sleep tracking accuracy; it struggles to log sleep correctly for those with restless nights.

The watch’s strength-training auto-recognition feature also falls short, missing several common exercises like pull-ups and push-ups. While the Amazfit Active 2’s battery life is advertised as up to 10 days, real-world usage with continuous health monitoring features results in about five days of battery life. Despite some flaws, the Amazfit Active 2 provides immense value for its price.

It offers numerous features typically found in more expensive trackers and has an elegant design that belies its budget-friendly cost. If Amazfit can iron out minor software issues, the Active 2 could become a top contender in the affordable fitness tracker market.
