Microsoft Embraces Git

At its ALM Summit, Microsoft made a somewhat surprising announcement: the company’s key development tools, including Visual Studio 2012, Team Foundation Server and Team Foundation Service, will now support Git.

The move was surprising because Git is an open source code management system created by Linus Torvalds, the founder of Linux. Microsoft was once a staunch opponent of open source in general and Linux in particular. However, Git has been enjoying growing popularity with developers. According to Microsoft’s Brian Harry, it was “super-clear that Git was winning,” so the company saw “no point in fighting the Git momentum.”
