Study: Nearly 40% of Enterprises Haven’t Secured Their Mobile Apps

A new joint study from IBM Security and the Ponemon Institute finds that enterprise mobile development teams aren’t doing enough to secure their mobile apps. In fact, it found that nearly 40 percent of enterprises hadn’t put built appropriate security measures into their customer-facing apps. Their findings include the following:

  • Most enterprises test fewer than half of their mobile apps.
  • 33 percent of enterprises never test any of their mobile apps.
  • Enterprises spend an average of $34 million per year on mobile development, but only 5.5 percent of that goes toward security.
  • 50 percent of organizations do not have a mobile security budget at all.
  • 65 percent of those surveyed said customer demands lead to security risks.
  • 77 percent of those surveyed said the “rush to release” results in security vulnerabilities.
  • At any given time, 11.6 million mobile devices are infected with malware.
