Atlassian is rolling out some improvements to its Bitbucket hosting platform that are designed to make it more competitive with GitHub. Specifically, the platform is getting smart mirroring, support for Git LFS and a Projects feature that supports multiple repositories. Bitbucket supports the Git and Mercurial version control systems, and the updates are said to make the platform faster and easier to use.
Bitbucket competes with GitHub, which is much better known. Forrester analyst Jeffrey Hammond said Bitbucket is “more of a competitor to GitHub enterprise — for companies that would like private hosted Git repositories. Given the popularity of other Atlassian tools with enterprises, I don?t see any reason why Bitbucket can?t do well as enterprises get more interested in using Git for SCM.”
