Market research firm Gartner has released a new survey on Internet of Things (IoT) projects at enterprises. Among those surveyed, 29 percent have already deployed IoT technologies, and another 14 percent plan to do so in 2016. In addition 21 percent plan to adopt IoT technologies sometime after 2016, but 38 percent have no IoT plans at all. Most of the firms in the last category said unclear business benefits are the main barrier to adoption.

"Up until now, the leading adopters of IoT have been more the industrial, heavy-industry-type businesses" involved in mining, manufacturing and the like, said Gartner researcher Chet Geschickter. The key benefits for these industries center around energy efficiency, predictive maintenance and preventing asset failure.
