Microsoft has confirmed that it has purchased SwiftKey for around $250 million. SwiftKey is a British startup that is best known for its predictive typing app. The company also makes the language software that powers Stephen Hawking's wheelchair.

Interestingly, the SwiftKey staff will be folded into Microsoft's ranks, but rather than join a mobile development team, they will be in the Technology and Research Group. Microsoft says it hopes to use SwiftKey's artificial intelligence capabilities to advance its machine learning efforts.
