Even though Oracle doesn't think Spring is necessary and even though Spring's founder no longer works for the company, VMware has made clear that it plans to continue supporting the popular Spring Framework. At an interview during the VMworld conference, VMware's Dave McJannet pointed out that Java development framework's user base continues to grow. "The point that comes to mind for me is pretty consistently more than half of all the Java apps in the world are built using the Spring Framework," he said. "We invest very heavily in Spring."

VMware acquired the Spring Framework when it purchased SpringSource in 2009. The company is currently focusing on Spring products tailored for mobile development and social networking, as well as big data projects like Spring for Apache Hadoop and Spring Data for MongoDB.
