Facebook Open Sources Presto SQL Engine

Facebook has released the source code for Presto, its interactive SQL-on-Hadoop engine, under an open source license. First introduced in June, Presto is said to average ten times faster than Hive, the popular Facebook-created data warehouse framework for Hadoop.

The social network says that more than 1,000 of its employees run Presto queries each day, and they perform more than 30,000 queries each day on more than a petabyte of data.
