Tesla releases Supervised Full Self-Driving v12.5

Self-Driving Tesla

Tesla has initiated the wide release of Supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) v12.5, marking a significant step in the company’s pursuit of autonomous driving technology. CEO Elon Musk expressed optimism about delivering an unsupervised self-driving system by the end of this year or early next year, although his history of overestimating timelines has led to some skepticism. The latest update, FSD 12.5.1, is currently available only for vehicles equipped with Tesla’s Hardware 4 (HW4), as further optimizations are needed for Hardware 3 (HW3).

Musk commented that optimizing the software for HW3 requires considerable effort and separate validation, estimating another 10 days before FSD 12.5 can be rolled out to HW3 vehicles. One user shared their experience with the system, expressing doubts about Tesla’s claim of year-long intervention-free driving.

They stated, “I’d be pleasantly surprised if I don’t get an intervention within my first hour of driving, let alone a year.” The user also raised concerns about the feasibility of an unsupervised system for HW3 vehicles, given the current software challenges. Despite the excitement among Tesla enthusiasts to test the latest updates, there is growing apprehension about the timeline for achieving a fully unsupervised self-driving system. Musk has hinted that the current HW3 Autopilot computer may soon become obsolete, with the next-generation AI5 computer expected to enter high-volume production within 18 months.

The AI5 hardware is anticipated to bring significant advancements in autonomous driving capabilities.

Tesla is also among the first companies to adopt TSMC’s N3P manufacturing process for its HW5 Autopilot chips, underscoring the technological advancements expected with the AI5 rollout. As Tesla continues to push the boundaries of self-driving technology, the automotive industry closely watches, eagerly awaiting the transformative impact of these developments on the future of transportation.
