Australia Cracks Down on Law-Breaking Apps

In-app purchases are coming under scrutiny.

Australia's Commonwealth Consumer Affairs Advisory Council (CCAAC) is launching an investigation into whether mobile development firms are abiding by its laws. The council's assistant treasurer David Bradbury asked consumers to identify developers who are breaking consumer-protection laws. He added, "Apps are also increasingly relying on 'in-app' purchases and subscriptions, particularly common in games that may be played by children. Some of these apps are causing consumers great frustration and cost, and this inquiry will help to name and shame some of the worst offenders."

The CCAAC will be accepting reports from app users through the end of Januray.
