Survey: 40% of Americans Have No Confidence in IoT Security Measures

In the wake of well-publicized incidents in which hackers used insecure Internet of Things (IoT) devices to mount cyberattacks, security vendor ESET and the National Cyber Security Alliance have released the results of a new survey on IoT security. It found that 40 percent of Americans have no confidence in the safety, security and privacy of connected devices, and 88 percent have considered the idea that their IoT devices could be hacked. Other key findings included the following:

  • 50 percent of respondents were discouraged from buying IoT devices because of security concerns.
  • 14 percent of respondents don’t know how many IoT devices they have.
  • 30 percent of respondents have never changed the default passwords for their routers, and 20 percent aren’t sure if they have done so.
