At the JavaOne 2012 event, Oracle’s Hasan Rizvi detailed some of the company’s upcoming plans for the Java platform. Those plans include support for Sumatra, a new project aimed at finding ways to allow Java applications to take advantage of the additional computing power in graphics processing units (GPUs) and accelerated processing units (APUs).
In addition, Rizvi said that the company is working on Java SE 8, with availability slated for late 2013. “We will continue to provide the Java community with a transparent roadmap so that they can plan ahead for future updates and platform releases, and we will continue to collaborate with contributors throughout the community in the evolution of the platform,” he stated.
Rizvi also discussed Project Nashorn, a proposed project to develop a JavaScript engine for the Java Virtual Machine.
