How Popular Is the Private Cloud?

Nearly half of North American enterprises say they are deploying private clouds, but that's likely a case of cloud-washing.

In a recent Forrester Research report, 30 percent of North American enterprises claimed to have deployed private clouds, 19 percent to have deployed hosted private clouds and only 10 percent to use public clouds. In addition, 44 percent of the enterprises surveyed said they were prioritizing private clouds in 2014.

But ReadWrite's Matt Asay thinks those numbers are a little farfetched. After all, three of the largest private cloud tool vendors have less than 300 customers each.

The Forrester report suggests this might be a case of "cloud-washing," noting, "For years, enterprises have been labeling enhanced virtualization environments as private cloud." In reality, the number of enterprises with true public clouds is probably more like 8 percent.
