California Attorney General Kamala Harris has sent letters to numerous companies, including United, Delta and OpenTable, warning that their mobile apps are violating state law. The California Online Privacy Protection Act requires all apps that collect personal information to post their privacy policies in a conspicuous location within the app. Companies that received the warning letters have 30 days to comply or respond to the letters. Those who are found to have violated the law face $2,500 fines.
“Protecting the privacy of online consumers is a serious law enforcement matter,” Harris said. “We have worked hard to ensure that app developers are aware of their legal obligations to respect the privacy of Californians, but it is critical that we take all necessary steps to enforce California’s privacy laws.”
