China-based Aliyun, a cloud computing vendor that is a subsidiary of e-commerce giant Alibaba, has announced the opening of a data center in Silicon Valley. This is the company’s first data center in the U.S. and its first outside China. Its other data centers are in Hangzhou, Qingdao, Beijing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
For now, the company plans to target Chinese companies with operations in the U.S. However, it’s likely that the large American cloud computing vendors are watching this development with interest. The new data center is also interesting in light of the high tensions between China and the U.S. with each country accusing the other of cyberespionage.
