Samsung has begun rolling out a new sleep apnea detection feature on its Galaxy Watch devices, just one day before the expected launch of the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra. The feature was first reported in February after receiving FDA clearance in the U.S. but had not been utilized by any Galaxy Watch models until now. A user shared screenshots showing the sleep apnea feature becoming available after updating the Samsung Health Monitor app.

The feature is available for the Galaxy Watch 4, 5, and 6, with the Watch 4 being the minimum model required. It also requires Wear OS 5 and One UI Watch 6. The Galaxy Watch needs a minimum of two nights to detect any signs of sleep apnea.

It tracks the number of “relative decreases in blood oxygen” per night, which can indicate if the user has moderate to severe sleep apnea. The feature automatically turns off after two nights. While Samsung has not extensively mentioned the feature beyond the FDA approval, the roll-out suggests it will be available with the Galaxy Watch 7’s launch.

Samsung is set to introduce the newest iteration of its BioActive Sensor on the next Galaxy Watch. The all-new BioActive Sensor features enhanced performance of light-receiving photodiodes, additional colors of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and optimized arrangement across the sensor.

This redesign has more than doubled the performance of each photodiode, reducing the number needed from eight to four and freeing up space for a larger variety of LEDs. The new sensor includes blue, yellow, violet, and ultraviolet LEDs and an increased number of green, red, and infrared LEDs. This integration and arrangement enable the exploration of new aspects of health monitoring on wearables.

The optimal allocation of Green, Red, and Infrared LEDs sets new standards in wearable technology, improving accuracy and enhancing performance across a broad array of health metrics. The new BioActive Sensor can more accurately measure heart rate, sleep quality, blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, and stress levels. Heart rate measurement during intensive workouts is now 30% more accurate compared to its predecessor.

The diverse colors of LEDs and newly designed photodiodes unlock new possibilities, empowering users to better predict trends and take proactive steps for preventative care. One pioneering feature will be an advanced glycation end products (AGEs) index, an indicator of metabolic health and biological aging influenced by lifestyle and dietary habits.

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Watch Ultra, the most significant update to its smartwatch lineup in years.

Priced at $650, the Ultra distinguishes itself with a robust design, advanced health features like sleep apnea detection, and promising fitness tools. The Galaxy Watch Ultra features a polarizing design with a square-ish 47mm case that houses Samsung’s classic round screen. Constructed from titanium, the watch feels light but is bulkier than similar rugged smartwatches.

It also comes with a bright 1.5-inch AMOLED screen that reaches a maximum of 3,000 nits and uses a touch bezel for navigation. One distinctive feature that Samsung has removed from the Ultra is the rotating bezel, a popular element for many users. In its place is a touch-sensitive bezel and three physical buttons, including a new Quick button for various functions.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra is powered by Samsung’s new 3-nanometer Exynos W1000 processor, offering faster performance than previous models. It is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance and can be submerged up to 100 meters. The watch is also built to withstand extreme temperatures and altitudes.

The back of the Ultra reveals a redesigned bioactive sensor, which enhances heart rate monitoring accuracy, blood oxygen readings, and the Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) Index, an indicator of metabolic health and biological aging. Samsung has also improved algorithms for more accurate tracking during high-intensity workouts. The Ultra includes dual-frequency GPS and built-in LTE, providing better accuracy and connectivity.

The most notable health feature is sleep apnea detection, which monitors sleep patterns to identify obstructive sleep apnea. For fitness enthusiasts, the Galaxy Watch Ultra offers various tools, such as the Functional Threshold Power (FTP) test for cyclists. This test measures the maximum intensity you can sustain for an hour, calculated in just four minutes by the watch.

The Ultra also features aerobic threshold heart rate zones and a race mode to compete against previous workouts. Battery life is substantial, with Samsung rating the Ultra’s endurance up to 60 hours with regular use and up to 100 hours in power-saving mode. An exercise power-saving mode also delivers up to 48 hours of runtime.

Alongside the Galaxy Watch Ultra, Samsung introduced the regular Galaxy Watch 7 at $300, which shares many features but in a more traditional design. Both models are available for preorder now and will be released on July 24.
