Microsoft has recently made several announcements related to Azure's infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offerings, and company officials say the cloud computing service's platform as a service (PaaS) will soon get some updates as well. Microsoft Azure Chief Technical Officer Mark Russinovich told ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, "We are working hard internally on taking PaaS forward. You'll see more on that next year."

More specifically, the Azure team is working "Windows Fabric" a new microservices architecture that will allow Azure apps to be "decomposed into tiny pieces, with each piece coming with a declarative model." Internal developers are already using Windows Fabric, and the company is still working out how it will roll out the new capabilities to its customers. Russinovich added, "This (Windows Fabric) is our internal microscale. More and more services are being built on it each day."
