Online handmade goods retailer Etsy recently completed a major rewrite of its Listing Manager, which sellers use to post items for sale. More than 10,000 Etsy users participated for the project. “This is the second largest prototype Etsy has ever done in terms of sheer numbers," Russ Posluszny, Etsy's engineering manager of shop management, said. "But in the level of participation, it was our most intensive.”

Designers and developers applied the principles of agile software development to speed the process and incorporate user feedback. They also used open source tools including PHP, JavaScript, Backbone, HTML and CSS.

Etsy sellers can opt to use the new tool now or wait until the company rolls it out to everyone next month.
