Microsoft Buys AI Startup Genee

Tech vendors continue to snap up artificial intelligence (AI) startups at a rapid pace. Today, it’s Microsoft purchasing Genee, which uses natural language processing and decision-making algorithms to perform some of the same tasks a human personal assistant would, such as scheduling meetings.

“Say you want to meet a potential customer, Diana, for coffee,” explained Rajesh Jha, Microsoft corporate VP for Outlook and Office 365. “Simply send an email to Diana and copy Genee, like you would a personal assistant. Genee understands that you want to ‘Find a time to meet with Diana for coffee next week’ and will streamline the process by emailing her directly with appropriate options that work with your calendar and preferences. Genee will even send out the meeting invite on your behalf – freeing up your time.”

Genee technology is an obvious fit for Office 365. It could also be integrated into Cortana, the AI-based personal assistant integrated into Windows.
