Microsoft to Buy Mobile App Security Firm PhoneFactor

Microsoft has announced its acquisition of PhoneFactor, a company that specializes in providing security, including two-factor authentication, for enterprise mobile apps. “The acquisition of PhoneFactor will help Microsoft bring effective and easy-to-use multifactor authentication to our cloud services and on-premise applications,” said Bharat Shah, corporate vice president for the Server and Tools Division at Microsoft, in a statement. “In addition, PhoneFactor’s solutions will help Microsoft customers, partners and developers enhance the security of almost any authentication scenario.”

PhoneFactor was previously a Microsoft partner, providing authentication services for Outlook Web Access, Internet Information Services, Active Directory and some other Microsoft software. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

PhoneFactor will continue operating as a separate entity for the time being, and it will continue offering services for developers other than Microsoft.
