Netscape Authentication failure with IIS 4.0

Netscape Authentication failure with IIS 4.0

Question:

Hi, we have a secure server that has anonymous Web Access removed from the relevant directories. This works fine with Internet Explorer, but with Netscape it fails completely. Whatever username / password you enter from Netscape always gets rejected with:

HTTP Error 401
401.3 Unauthorized: Unauthorized due to ACL on resource

Many Thanks for any help,
Cormac Murphy

Answer:

Since IE users have no problem, it sounds like Internet Information Server is configured to use Windows NT Challenge/Response authentication. Netscape doesn’t support that form of authentication.

Go into Internet Service Manager and open the property page for the Web. Click the Directory Security tab and uncheck Windows NT challenge/ response and check Basic Authentication. If all goes well, Netscape users will get in.
