At Build 2015, Microsoft announced a new cloud-based big data service called Azure Data Lake. The new cloud computing service gives developers a centralized location to store all of their data, both structured and unstructured, in its native format. It’s compatible with Hadoop tools like Spark, Storm, and Kafka, as well as Azure HDInsight.
T.K. “Ranga” Rengarajan, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for its data platform, explained, “We?re living in the golden age of data. I think of it as everyone in the world getting drunk on data. And for the first time, it?s economically feasible to get value out of the data we used to throw away.”
Microsoft made several other announcements at the event, including some related to the Windows Store, Universal App development, a free cross-platform code editor called Visual Studio Code, a .NET distribution for Linux and Mac, the new Microsoft Edge browser, and Windows 10. The company seems to be taking a much more cross-platform approach with its development tools, while also making plans to put Windows 10 on 1 billion devices by 2018.
